A rare mid 18th-Century brass "snuff-box" microscope, signed on a silver plate Geo: Lindsay Inv & Fec. , riveted to the upper stage plate objective-holder, 29 stamped on the other side, the stage frame stamped 1742 on the underside, with adjustable lower stage and slide holder, fitted with a delicate blued-iron pointer to read against a silver scale finely engraved 1-7 fitted to the side of the frame, with hinged slide holder, the shaped and pierced crank lever operating on the underside to move the stage and thus the pointer along the graduated scale, with two ( of seven ) bead-glass objectives mounted with lieberkuhn and arranged to slide into the objective holder and a stage-mounted mirror, stage forceps and a brass-cased set of one lignum vitae and four ivory sliders, the body of the microscope with folding pierced and shaped upper support mounting on a rectangular-section tapering, waisted and stepped pillar stand, threaded to screw into the brass ferrule on top of the black fishskin-covered case with green plush-lined lid and brass catch -- 3 1/8in.
