the terrestrial globe with cartouche printed The New Twelve Inch British Terrestrial Globe, Representing The Accurate Positions of the Principle Known Places of the Earth from the Discoveries of Captain Cook and Subsequent Circumnavigators to the Present Period 1802, with W & S Jones trade label applied below, the celestial globe with printed cartouche The New Twelve Inch British Celestial Globe Containing the exact positions of more than 3800 Fix'd Stars, Nebulae, Planetary Nebulae & according to the latest Discoveries and Observations of dr Maskelyne, Dr Herschell and other eminent Astronomers. And corrected to the present period, both mounted in a brass meridian withing horizontal ring applied with coloured printed calendar and zodiac scales, raised on four turned and ebonised wood legs with stretcher, mounted in contemporary stained pine sea chest with hinged lid and applied column decoration, the lid with label printed To Whom It May Concern: I purchased the pair of Globes and Salem Box from Marjorie W Swift of Cape Cod. She told me she is a direct descendent of the famous Salem, Massachusetts Captain, George Nichols (see George Nichols Salem Ship-master and Merchant, edited by Martha Nichols, Salem Press c 1900. This was supposed to have been purchased on one of his voyages to Europe and the Box made on board ship, probably by the ship's carpenter. together with a copy of the book "George Nichols Salem Shipmaster and Merchant", the chest
