A RUBY, SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND OLYMPIC FLAME BROOCH, BY WINSTON The calibré-cut ruby and circular-cut diamond flame and urn surmounting five rings set with calibré-cut sapphires and rubies and single-cut diamonds, mounted in platinum and gold By Winston This brooch was presented to Miss Martha Macy Hill upon the christening of the S.S. Olympic Flame on December 17th, 1949. Miss Hill's grandfather, Jack Macy Willis, was head of Bethlehem Steel and a close personal friend of Aristotle Onassis, who affectionately referred to him as "Uncle Jack". Mr. Onassis commissioned several ships from Bethlehem Steel, including this series entitled, The Olympic Fleet , comprising seven merchant ships. When Mr. Onassis asked Mr. Willis who should christen this ship, Mr. Willis suggested his seventeen year-old granddaughter, Martha. During a luncheon held later that day in her honor, this brooch was presented to her by Mr. Stavros Niarchos, brother-in-law of Mr. Onassis. It was commissioned by Mr. Onassis from Harry Winston and incorporates the five Olympic rings and flame, the logo of this particular fleet.
