A Selection of the most interesting of Sir Robert Ainslie's Celebrated Collection of Views... Author: Mayer, Luigi Place: London Publisher: Printed for R. Bowyer by T. Bensley Date: 1811 & 1812 Description: 2 volumes bound together. [6] pp. + 49 hand-colored aquatint plates. (Folio) 48.8x33.3 cm (19¼x13¼"), period mottled boards rebacked in modern leather with fresh morocco lettering piece on spine, raised bands, original marbled endpapers retained. Comprising: A selection of the most interesting of Sir Robert Ainslie's celebrated collection of views in Turkey in Europe, and in Asia ; Syria, Sicily, the Eolian Islands ; temple of Diana, at Ephesus ; Jupiter Ammon, in Libya, &c. &c. 21 (of 24) hand-colored aquatint plates, 1 of them double-page. A selection of the most interesting of Sir Robert Ainslie's celebrated collection of views in Egypt, Asia Minor, &c. 28 hand-colored aquatint plates. Spectacular series of hand-colored aquatint plates of people and scenery of the Middle East, likely engraved by W. Watts, from drawings by Luigi Mayer They are selected from Mayer's Views of the Ottoman Domains. The second work has seven plates not on list of plates. Volume I lacks Cathedral at Tortosa (plate 9), View at Villa Scabrosa (plate 17), and Interior View of Ditto, with Hieroglyphics (plate 23). Volume II lacks title page and 3 plates: Passage from the Second to the Third Gallery in the Great Pyramid (plate 4), The Principal Street in Bethlehem (plate 19), and Fountain of Siloam (plate 20). Additional plates in Volume II include: City of Corinth, Joseph's Hall in the Castle of Cairo, Jerusalem with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Remains of a Tower on Mount Sion, Bridge over the Brook Kedron, Village of Bethany & The Dead Sea, The Sepulchre of Rachel, The Sepulchre of Absalom. Lot Amendments Condition: Some dampstaining and rubbing to boards, chips to original paper covering boards; some rubbing and minor chips to endpapers, a few minor chips and tears at margins; small split to folding plate at bottom of fold; very good overall.
