A SHINSHINTO TOSA KATANA EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850), SIGNED SUKENAO Configuration ( sugata ): with longitudinal ridge line ( shinogi-zukuri ), shallow peaked back ( iori-mune ) and long point ( o-kissaki ); length ( nagasa ): 2 shaku , 4 sun , 2 bu (73.4 cm.); curvature ( sori ): koshi-zori of 1.7 cm.; decrease in width of blade ( fumbari ): 0.9 cm. Forging pattern ( jihada ): strong wood grain ( itame ). Tempering pattern ( hamon ): large, shallow, clove patterns ( o-choji ) in nioi . Point ( boshi ): midare-komi with brushed tip ( hakikake ). Tang ( nakago ). Shape ( keitai ): long (23.2 cm.), slightly curving, ubu and with a dry, brown patina; notches have probably been moved up ( machi-okuri ) approximately 2 cm.; file marks ( yasurime ): sloping ( sujikai ); end ( nakagojiri ): iri-yamagata ; holes ( mekugi-ana ): two; signature ( katanamei ): Sukenao . Russet ishime saya fitted with an iron and gilt kojiri ; remaining mounts missing.
