Beautiful 17th century binding by Thomas Dawson the Elder of Cambridge, tooled in gilt with an outer roll and border of semi-circles interspersed with a small lozenge tool, two panels of fillets, rolls, and repeated tools, the inner panel with corners of volutes, fleurons, etc. and lozenge-shaped centerpiece pf similar tools. Gilt spine in six panels, one with morocco lettering-piece, comb-marbled endpapers. The twin of this binding was sold by Maggs Bros, see their Spring 1987 catalogue. This copy has a purchaser's inscription on front free endpaper verso: "Bought of Mr Giles in Holburn. June 11th 1728. 10.-6" and a few notes on the rear endpapers in the same hand. Wing D2492. Lot Amendments Condition: Chipping to spine ends and light wear to joints, hinges repaired, slight loss to lettering piece, corners showing; scattered mild browning internally; about near fine.
