A SPECTACULAR SUITE OF EGYPTIAN REVIVAL LAPIS LAZULI, ENAMEL AND GOLD JEWELRY A necklace, the six-row swag composed of lapis lazuli hemispheres and gold Vitruvian scrolls, chased sacred cats, deer, lions and bell motifs, suspended by twin sculpted gold falcon head terminals, applied with red and blue enamel, each with a lapis lazuli eye, attached to a wide gold mesh crossover band, terminating with a gold mesh fringe-- approximately 20 ins. long ; and a pair of ear pendants en suite, circa 1870 This neck ornament was inspired by a necklace from the burial treasure of Queen Aahhotep, wife of Ahmose, XVIIIth Dynasty, 1550-1525 B.C., found in 1859 at Dra Abu Naga in West Thebes and now in the Egyptian Museum Cairo. The piece was offered to Zora, daughter of Jean-François-Champollion (1790-1832), who, in 1822, was the first to decipher hieroglyphics. The piece was handed down in the Champollion family and worn in 1922, on the occasion of the official centenary of that historic date. (3)
