Best known for his photographs capturing Jewish culture in central and eastern Europe before the Holocaust. The Joint financed his work as part of a fundraising drive, but Vishniac was personally attracted to the Shtetl and Jewish ghettoes and continued traveling throughout Europe years after the Joint discontinued their financial support. During those years he was often arrested by the police and was even suspected of being a spy since he was caught photographing.
