This is possibly the only full 16th century chamfron in the last 40 years in America; either German or Italian, this chamfron is finely forged throughout with a roped medial ridge extending nearly its full length. Chamfron itself measures 20 in. long and 11 in. wide, two finely forged ears with rope borders and shaped medials attached with three rivets. Head covering finely forged with rope medial and shaped panels en suite with the ears, eye sockets with rope borders en suite with ears and medials. Chamfron appears to have its original engraved plume holder. Weight: 3.4 lbs. Provenance:From the Collection of Peter Wainwright Jr. Condition: Chamfron polished bright in the European manner, and shows both delamentation and exfoliation of metal appropriate for 16th century armour. Interior of chamfron shows great age and is uncleaned and unpolished. Numerous rivets with ancient leather underneath. Though it bears no armorer's marks this chamfron is clearly the work of a master armour of the 16th century. We know of no other example of this horse armour that has been sold in America.
