A Victorian Coalbrookdale Serpent and Grapes pattern cast iron and slatted wood garden bench, last quarter 19th century, the armrests with dogs' heads terminals with serpents beneath, each end cast with the pattern number 17597, 83cm high, 126cm wide, (wood slats later replaced) This design number 17597 is the second oldest pattern registered and patented by the Coalbrookdale Foundry at the Public Records Office, on 6th April 1844. It appears as seat number 9 in their Castings Catalogue of 1875. Its presence on this particular seat would suggest that it is almost certainly of the Coalbrookdale Foundry.
