A VICTORIAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER & CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL CUP & COVER SET WITH SEMI-PRECIOUS GEMS
MARK OF ELKINGTON & CO., BIRMINGHAM, 1863
A VICTORIAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER & CHAMPLEVE ENAMEL CUP & COVER SET WITH SEMI-PRECIOUS GEMS, MARK OF ELKINGTON & CO., BIRMINGHAM, 1863, Of compressed circular form on fluted baluster stem with spherical knop, on pedestal foot, the finial modelled as a seated putto with cymbals, applied with putti on small arched panels separated by cabochon garnets, the turquoise enamel field incorporating foliate scrollwork, the cover with green & red petals radiating out from under the finial, the sides similarly decorated & applied with medallions of classical busts & reclining figures, the knop with circular panels chased with classical figures & set with garnets, the foot set with turquoise beads, gilt interior, green & purple enamel decoration to borders, the sides further embellished with small orange, red, green & dark blue bead, teardrop & other motifs, gilt interior, ( some minor damage/restoration to enamel), the detachable base applied with oval stamp of the Science & Art Department which allowed Elkington to copy works in the South Kensington Museum (later the Victoria & Albert Museum), 9¾ in. high (25 cm.), 5¾ in. diameter (14.7 cm.)
