A VICTORIAN SCOTTISH STONE-SET SILVER AND MOTHER-OF-PEARL SNUFF BOX OF HISTORICAL INTEREST JAS. OR JNO. CRICHTON (JACKSON, P.555), EDINBURGH, 1858 Rectangular, the top set with a carved double-sided mother-of-pearl plaque of Leda and her two children on one side, and Leda and the Swan on interior side; at the corners an amethyst thistle, a malachite shamrock, a garnet rose, and an agate pagoda, emblems of Scotland, Ireland, England and China, the base engraved with presentation inscription, the sides engraved with scrolling foliage, the interior gilt, marked on interior of base 4¼ in. (10.8 cm.) long The base engraved with inscription: This snuff-box of Chinese manufacture, re-mounted in 1859 by Messrs. Lister, was presented to me in 1812 by my half-brother, Captain William Wilkinson of the Columbian Navy. He early fell by the sword while gallantly fighting in the War of Independence waged by the South-American states; having gone out in the command of the "Cumberland" East Indianman, converted, in the Chilian service into the "San Martin" of 56 guns.
