A VOLUNTEER OFFICER'S SILVER-HILTED PRESENTATION SWORD
BIRMINGHAM SILVER HALLMARKS FOR 1861
A VOLUNTEER OFFICER'S SILVER-HILTED PRESENTATION SWORD BIRMINGHAM SILVER HALLMARKS FOR 1861 Silver maker's mark G.R.C, with straight blade etched with panels of scrollwork and oak foliage over much of its length on both sides, involving the cypher 'SRV' for Staffordshire Rifle Volunteeers on one side, and the recipient's crest, a presentation inscription and the regimental device on the other, silver hilt cast in relief, the guard decorated with an elaborate pierced design of flowers and foliage enclosing the recipient's crest on an escutcheon supported by triumphant cherubs, and with the presentation inscription repeated around the edge, original grip of chequered horn bound with silver wire, and in its original silver-plated scabbard (the blade with minor patches of light pitting). 32½in (82.6cm) blade
