Act of Congress Creating the Office of Shipping Commissioner Author: Place: San Francisco Publisher: For Sale by J.G. Hodge & Co., Women's Print. Date: [1872] Description: [4], 20 pp. 23.2x14.9 cm (8¾x5¾"), original printed wrappers. "A true copy" issued by the shipping commissioner for the port of San Francisco, signed by the commissioner, J. D. Stevenson, on preliminary leaf, as issued, along with his circular blindstamp. Detailed in the text are the various rules and regulations to be overseen by the commissioner, including "Discipline for Seamen." OCLC locates only one copy of this edition, at the Huntington Library, as well as two copies of an 1873 edition with variant imprint, and no mention of the signed leaf. J.D. Stevenson was born Jan. 1, 1800 in NY; private secretary to NY Governor Daniel D. Tompkins, later accompanying him to Washington, DC, when Tompkins was elected Vice-President in 1816; won a seat in the NY State Assembly; accepted command of military volunteer regiment in CA from President Polk in 1846 and arrived in San Francisco in March 1847; made commander of post in Monterey and later became military commander of the southern district of CA (headquartered in Los Angeles), May 1847; after his regiment went out of service in 1848, he later entered the mining and real estate businesses; appointed Shipping Commissioner, Port of San Francisco, 1872; died in San Francisco on Feb. 14, 1894. He returned to San Francisco to enter the real estate business with William C. Parker He remained in the city carrying on his real estate business and was appointed Shipping Commissioner for the Port of San Francisco in 1872. He held this position for many years. Even after his term as Shipping Commissioner expired, he continued to engage in his law practice and to manage real estate transactions. He died in San Francisco on February 14, 1894, a respected and prominent figure among local celebrities. Printed by the Women’s Cooperative Printing Office, with the cover title “within fancy, non-right -angel corners that match oxford ruled”- Levenson, Women in Printing, Northern California, Checklist of Imprint #166. An extensive, and historically significant archive Jonathan Drake Stevenson is divided between UCLA and Bancroft Libraries with no copy of this publication locates in UCLA, and one copy locates at Bancroft Library, with no mention of the signed leaf. It also early example of the San Francisco Women’s Cooperative Printing Office. Lot Amendments Condition: Minor soiling and wear to wrappers, the whole with mild vertical crease, neat repair to rear wrapper; very good. Item number: 324492
