Autograph letter signed ("John Adams") to his grandson "Master George Washington Adams" at The Atkinson Academy; Quincy, Massachusetts, 3 February 1812. 1 3/4 pages, 8vo, 195 x 120mm. (7 3/4 x 4 3/4 in.), two clean tears along two folds, discreetly repaired from verso (not affecting text), two light stains in center of sheet, extreme upper corner with a small circular burn, (affecting two words of text), tipped to a larger sheet. JOHN ADAMS TO HIS GRANDSON, GEORGE WASHINGTON ADAMS: "OH SAVE MY COUNTRY HEAVEN, AND WITH MY COUNTRY, MY CHILDREN AND GRAND CHILDREN" A loving letter in which Adams chides and advises his eleven-year-old grandson about his scholastic career: "I regret very much that Mr. Whitney did not put the Greek Grammar and the Greek Testament into your hands, much sooner. I wish that Language to be indelibly impressed on your Memory. You cannot study Virgil or Cicero too much... [R]emember that Dr Barrow and Sir Isaac Newton... studied Arithmetick and Geometry... You may hereafter, find out that the French, whom you are now taught to detest as if they were an immense Nest of Hornets or Wasps, a Den of Rattlesnakes or of Wolves or Tygers... are at this Moment prosecuting with more Glory and Solid Success, every Branch of Litterature [ sic ] and Science, than any other Nation of Europe... You certainly improve in your Chirography and Nothing is wanting but Patience Attention and Resolution to make you as perfect in this respect as your father... My dear Boy I feel more Anxiety for your good conduct worthy improvement and happiness in life; and for all the rest of my grandchildren than any of them will ever be able to conceive before they shall arrive to my age. Oh Save my Country Heaven, and with my Country, my Children and Grand Children..." George Washington Adams (1801-1829), eldest child of John Quincy Adams and Louisa Johnson Adams, suffered from a debilitating nervous condition which later developed into paranoia. He died at twenty-eight, after fathering an illegitimate child, when he either fell or jumped from a ship in 1829 (DeGregorio, The Complete Book of Presidents , p. 90).
