ADAMS, John Quincy Autograph sentiment signed ("John Quincy Adams"), Washington, 31 December 1841. 1 page, oblong, 7 x 1¾ in . A NEW YEAR'S EVE SENTIMENT FROM "OLD MAN ELOQUENT". Adams writes: "The ways of Wisdom are the ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace - saith Solomon." A fitting expression from America's wise elder statesman. A former diplomat, Senator, Cabinet Secretary, and then President of the United States, Adams returned to public service in 1831 as a member of the House of Representatives, where he was a voice of conscience in the Whig Party against slavery. Earlier that year Adams argued the case of the Amistad crew before the U.S. Supreme Court, winning them their freedom after they had forcibly seized control of the salve ship bringing them to America. For six more years he fought against Congressional legislation that would have reimbursed the owners of the vessel for their losses.
