A FORMER PRESIDENT VOWS "TO ABSTAIN FROM ALL INTERFERENCE WITH THE CANVAS FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION" Former President Adams declines to comment on the future presidential election: "I have received your Letter...with one...from the whig young Men's Committee of the City of New York propounding certain questions concerning the expediency of a National Convention of Whig young men, on the Presidential question...Flattered as I feel...I have deemed it my duty to abstain from all interference with the canvas for the Presidential election -- chiefly desiring that the People, who are to indicate their choice may so far concentrate their preference, as to relieve me as one of their representatives from the task of assisting to make the selection for them..." In the Whig Convention, in December 1839, former Secretary of State Henry Clay was the front-runner, but, because he was a prominent Mason, was bitterly opposed by anti-Masonic elements and lost the nomination to Harrison.
