ADVENTURES INTO TERROR Nos. 7, 8 and 12 * Lot of Three Comic Books Publisher: Atlas [Indicia: Current Detective Stories, Inc.] Date Published: Dec. 1951-October 1952 Description: #7: VG (4.0). Spine ticks, top spine slightly bumped, edge nicks, diagonal cover crease, reading creases to open edges of covers, 1" tear to right edge of front cover. Cream to off-white pages. Clean and press to 4.5? GPAnalysis: A 4.0 sold for $173 in 9/22. #8: VG- (3.5). Mild spine roll, mild spine stress, reading wrinkle to front cover, small crease top corner of front cover, bottom right corner of front cover chipped, a few shallow chips and short tears to back cover. Off-white pages, edges light tan, occasional foxing. GPAnalysis: A 3.5 sold for $268 in 1/23. #12: VG+ (4.5). Very slight spine roll, reading crease with no color break to top right corner area of front cover, small corner creases, shallow chip to top right corner of front cover. Off-white pages. Clean and press to 5.0? GPAnalysis: A 5.0 sold for $192 in 12/22. Covers and art: George Tuska, Sol Brodsky, Harry Lazarus, Joe Maneely, Basil Wolverton, Hy Rosen, Bill Walton, Manny Stallman, Joe Sinnott, Bernie Krigstein, Ed Winiarsky, Ed Robbins, Dick Ayres. Pretty chaste stuff despite innuendo-laden story titles (“The Thing that Grew,” “Going Down”). Bernie Krigstein’s “Horror in the Graveyard” features a murderer who meets the vengeful corpses of his three victims. The zombie trio, who call themselves “The Unholy Three,” bear a curious resemblance to EC’s GhouLunatics (one of the zombies is almost a “dead” ringer for the Vault Keeper). Krigstein’s biographer considers this story to be the apex of Krigstein’s early horror period: “By the time of his last primitive horror entry, ‘Horror in the Graveyard,’ he had already been taking crime in more subtle directions.” — Greg Sadowski, B. Krigstein Vol. 1. Fantagraphics: 2002, p. 132. A limited edition of ten hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a few dozen softcovers. Fun reference, great keepsake, fully illustrated, chockablock with obscure facts, gags, bon mots. Softcovers are $40, deluxe hardcovers with dust jackets and limitation plates are $200. These books always go fast so don't delay. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com. Consignments welcome for PBA's Fall 2023 Comic Book sale.
