Ägypten. - Description de l'Égypte, ou recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont été faites en Egypte pendant l'expédition de l'armée française. Publié par les ordres de sa Majesté l'Empéreur Napoléon le Grand. Planches. In 14 Bdn. Paris, Imprimerie Impériale, 1809 ff. Gr.-fol. (11; 73:56 cm) u. Imp.-fol. (3; 109:71 cm). Mit 1 gest. Frontispiz, 1 gest. Titel zum Atlas, 837 Kupfertafeln, davon 43 in Farbdruck mit Retusche bzw. koloriert u. einige eingefaltet, 2 Kupferkarten u. 46 Tafeln im Atlas mit Karten. Hldr. d. Zt., stark berieben u. bestoßen, Rücken fehlen, teilw. gelockert. bzw. lose.
First edition of the magnificent Napoleonic report on Egypt, the beginning of modern Egyptology, and the most significant publication ever produced by the French government. Plates only bound in 14 volumes in large folio and imperial folio. The contents are arranged into three categories: Antiquités, L'État moderne and Histoire Naturelle and plus one atlas with maps and one volume of text with Explication des planches. The plates are bound in large format in two sizes, so that most of the plates, even the oversized ones, are plano and only a few are folded in. Since the plates of a series are bound in the large folio volume and the imperial folio volume, they are not always present in numerical order. For contents see the German description, lacking plate 26 in Etat Moderne, part 1. - Overall partly browned and foxed, often in the margins and there partly dusty or somewhat soiled. Text volume more browned and foxed. Antiquitez vol. 5 waterstained. Bound in contemporary half-calf, heavily rubbed and worn, spines lacking, partly loose. - Together with: Description de l'Egypte. Text volumes 1-6, 8-9, 11-17, 18/2-3, 20-24 of the second edition in 22 vols. Paris 1821-29. 20th cent. half leather.
