AESOP -- PETROV, Pavel Ivanovich. Ezopovy Basni s russkim perevodom dlia nastavleniia iunoshestva . [Aesop's Fables with a Russian translation, for the instruction of children]. Moscow: August Semen, 1824.
AESOP -- PETROV, Pavel Ivanovich. Ezopovy Basni s russkim perevodom dlia nastavleniia iunoshestva . [Aesop's Fables with a Russian translation, for the instruction of children]. Moscow: August Semen, 1824. 2 parts in 1 vol., 12° (159 x 105mm). 46 chromolithographs (of 50). Facing Russian and French text. (Repairs to first few leaves with some letters lost, occasional spotting and browning, some short marginal tears, a few worm tracks in the inside margin.) Later sheep with gilt tools (endpapers renewed, spine cracked, affecting some quires, gilt flaking, extremities rubbed, some wear to rear cover). CHARMINGLY ILLUSTRATED WITH NUMEROUS ENGRAVINGS. Between 1786 and 1796, Petrov contributed translations from French, German and Latin to the journal New Monthly Works , a revival of the Monthly Works published between 1755 and 1764, which had played host to the public conflict between Lomonosov, Tred'iakovskii and Sumarokov. He also edited the journal The Magic Lantern in 1817, and published several children's works besides this one. The text provides linguistic as well as moral instruction: Petrov's footnotes provide Russian translations of French vocabulary for each of the stories. Petrov also gives a short biography of Aesop. RARE: WorldCat records no copies in North America. Smirdin 8332.
