AFRICA] DANIELL, WILLIAM. Sketches Representing the Native Tribes, Animals, and Scenery of Southern Africa. . London: Richard and Arthur Taylor 1820. First edition. Tall folio, possibly a large paper copy, with remnants of an inscription. Later half-burgundy morocco over marbled boards. 13 5/8 x 11 inches (35 x 28 cm); 48 soft ground etching with accompanying text. Spotting to several plates, some heavily so, thumbsoiling to title and excision to upper right corner where name of recipient was formerly leaving the inscription "from his friend the Author" presumably in Daniell's hand, extremities of binding rubbed. Mendelssohn I, p.412-413; Abbey Travel 326; Together with Sketches of a Voyager. [London: circa 1830]. First edition of a scarce title. Modern brown morocco gilt, original wrappers bound in. Pictorial title and 25 soft ground plates. Pencil notations, dampstains and repairs to a few plates N.B. normally 27 plates but Thomas Sutton The Daniells London [1954], says that a copy with two fewer plates (with different subjects) was published between 1827 and 1830.
