After the Antique: An overlifesize model of the Venus D'Arles
French, 18th/19th century 212cm.; 83½ins high This copy of the Venus D~Arles is lacking arms and is slightly larger than the original which was restored by Francois Girardon (1628-1715) who added the arms as suitable attributes for Venus to hold an apple and a mirror. The original was found at the Amphitheatre in Arles in 1651 in three fragments and is on display in the Louvre. It is catalogued as being 1st Century AD Roman Imperial copy of a piece by Praxitiles c. 360 B.C. (the Aphrodite di Thespies). It was moved to Versailles where it was displayed in the galerie des Glaces.
