ALAN DAVIE1920-2014 GUARDIAN SPIRIT FOR A VOYAGE BY NIGHT signed and dated 58 twiceoil on paper laid on canvasunframed: 47 by 60.5cm.; 18½ by 23¾in.framed: 78 by 89.5cm.; 30½ by 35¼in. The sheet has been fully laid down onto canvas. There is a deckle to the upper and right sheet edges. The remaining sheet edges have been neatly cut. There is a short diagonal crease to the upper right corner, with associated very fine lines of craquelure and very slight lifting from the canvas. There may be one or two further more minor instances of fine lines of craquelure elsewhere, including to the lower edge of the white element at lower centre. There is minor time staining to the sheet, only visible in the unpainted areas. There are one or two possible instances of discoloration to the white pigment. There is some very light surface soiling and a few very minor instances specks of surface matter and studio detritus to the work in places. There are a few air bubbles in keeping with the Artist's working method. There are one or two possible flattened impasto tips. This excepting, the work appears to be in very good overall condition. Inspection under Ultraviolet light reveals a possible very small area of restoration in the lower right quadrant of the dark blue element. The work fluoresces in places in keeping with the Artist's working methods. The work is presented in a simple wooden frame with wooden slip, held under glass.
