Cette gravure de Dürer, intitulée « Le Chevalier, la Mort et le Diable » est l'une des œuvres les plus célèbres de l'artiste allemand Albrecht Dürer Elle a été réalisée en 1513 et représente un chevalier qui chevauche à travers un paysage encaissé, flanqué d'un squelette représentant la Mort, et d'un démon symbolisant le Diable. Le chevalier, d'allure fière, est représenté en armure avec une lance à la main, ce qui indique sa vaillance et sa détermination. La présence de la Mort et du Diable à ses côtés peut être interprétée comme une représentation allégorique de la vie comme un chemin difficile et dangereux, où l'on doit faire face à de nombreux obstacles. Le chevalier est entouré de paysages rocailleux et arides, représentant la difficulté du chemin qu'il doit parcourir. Le cheval qu'il monte est également un symbole fort, représentant la force, la loyauté et la noblesse, tout comme la figure du chien qui l'accompagne, associée à la loyauté et à la foi (fides). La Mort, tenant un sablier dans la main, symbole de l'éphémère, est représentée sous les traits d'un squelette avec des cheveux de serpent et portant une faux, symbolisant la fin de la vie et le destin inéluctable de la mort. Le Diable, quant à lui, est représenté comme un petit diable poilu, avec des cornes et une queue, qui tente de détourner le chevalier de son chemin.
Inspirée du psaume 23 (22) : « Bien que je marche dans la vallée de l'ombre de la mort, je ne crains aucun mal », cette œuvre d'art complexe et riche en significations symboliques est un bel exemple de Memento Mori qui nous rappelle la fragilité de l'existence. Le chevalier représente la Vita Activa, une vie active et combattante, mais qui prend aussi le risque de mourir bientôt au combat. Représentation de la lutte entre le bien et le mal, entre la vie et la mort, elle peut également être vue comme une représentation de la tentation, avec le Diable qui tente de détourner le chevalier de son chemin. Il semble que le noble couple de l'homme et du cheval, celui-ci admirablement construit selon les canons classiques de la Renaissance italienne, transmette l'idée d'une invincible marche en avant, triomphant des obscures fantasmagories du Néant et du Mal, marqué par la tradition nordique dont est originaire l'artiste.

Inspired by Psalm 23 (22): "Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil", this complex and richly symbolic work of art is a beautiful example of Memento Mori that reminds us of the fragility of existence. The knight represents the Vita Activa, an active and combative life unafraid of the risk of eventually dying in battle. Representing the struggle between Good and Evil, between life and death, it can also be seen as a representation of temptation, with the Devil trying to divert the knight from his path.
