Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) Cheval II, 1930 (cast 1964) Monogrammed "AC" (overlapping) on the horse's right rear hoof, stamped "42" on the underside of the horse's right front hoof. Bronze with black patina, 4 1/2 x 8 x 4 3/4 in. (11.4 x 20.3 x 12.0 cm). Condition: Minor wear to patina, dust and dirt to interstices. Provenance: documenta Foundation, Kassel, Germany (1964); to Obelisk Gallery, Boston, Massachusetts; to Mr. and Mrs. Leo Marcus, Brookline, Massachusetts, (1968); by descent to the current owner, private Massachusetts collection (2014). N.B. The Calder Foundation dates the work as 1930 in their records. This cast is from an edition of 50 that was produced in 1964, made for the documenta Foundation, Kassel, Germany, to raise funds for documenta III, held that year. Alongside Venice's Biennale, documenta is seen as the most important, regularly occurring exhibition for modern and contemporary art in the world. The lot is accompanied by a copy of the original invoice from Obelisk Gallery dated October 31, 1968 and by an appraisal from Obelisk Gallery dated October 10, 1968.
