Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) Un Movil Dedicated and signed "para Carlos Merida de Sandy Calder" l.r., titled in the image u.l., dated "eldia 7 de septiembre 1948" l.l., identified in information and with Alexander Calder Foundation #A18043 on the backing. Colored pencil on stationary from the Hotel Prince, Mexico, 8 1/2 x 10 3/4 in. (21.6 x 27.3 cm), framed. Condition: Subtle toning, repairs to upper corners, minute nicks to edges. Provenance: Acquired from the artist by Carlos Merida, Mexico, then by descent to Ana Merida, Mexico, then by descent to Ana Luna Merida, then to Solomon and Co. Fine Art, New York, then to a private New England collection. N.B. One of the most renowned sculptors of the 20th century, Alexander Calder produced both mobiles (moving sculptures) and stabiles (stationary sculptures). Ranging in media, color, and size, his abstract sculptures challenged perceptions of movement, space, and time. These works were intended to be organic objects, representing natural and random elements in the world, and were often produced without any preparatory work. This drawing is a rare example of a preliminary sketch for a sculpture. The work depicted here has not been located.
