Albumen photograph with the following printed on mount below image: Negative by J. Gardner/ Positive by A. Gardner / No. 26 / Meeting of the Shenandoah and Potomac at Harper's Ferry/ July, 1865, 7 x 9 in., on original mount and accompanied by original descriptive panel. Presented in an archival mount and mat. Meeting of the Shenandoah and Potomac at Harper's Ferry was plate No. 26 of the 100 plates published in Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War. This albumen photograph documents the town made famous by John Brown's 1859 raid on the United States Armory, and records the burned armory buildings along with the encampment of the then current occupying Union troops. This is not only a beautiful, artistically composed photograph, but also a visual historical document. Condition: Image retains strong tones; some light, even toning to print and mount.
