Woodcut white-on-black initial E (35mm. square) for incipit: El papa alexandro. vi. concedio por su bula ; below the text, woodcut of the Virgin holding the Cross: ecce lignum crucis, and woodcut signature of an official. (Lower left blank corners replaced, minor repairs at folds affecting a few letters.) Provenance : two early inscriptions on verso, Bula del Hospital del cardenal don Pedro Gonzalez de mendoza (contractions resolved). APPARENTLY UNRECORDED (not in Perez Pastor or Norton). Archbishop Gonzalez de Mendoza died in 1495, the Spanish Pope alexander VI (Rodrigo de Borja y Borja) in august 1503. almost immediately after taking over the Toledo press from Pedro Hagembach, his anonymous successor printed three indulgences for the Hospital of Santiago de Compostela in 1503 (Norton 1033-35), with the same combination of types.
