Alfred Thompson Bricher (American, 1837-1908) Marine Scene, Possibly Off Bailey's Island, Maine Signed "ABricher" l.r., label from Livingston Galleries, New York, on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 18 x 39 in. (45.7 x 99.0 cm), framed. Condition: Strip lined, repaired punctures, retouch. N.B. Alfred Thompson Bricher born in New Hampshire in 1837, spent many summers vacationing on the New England coastline. He began his professional career as a businessman in Boston, but his fondness for marine vistas must have overtaken his corporate ambition. By his early twenties, he was able to establish himself as a full-time painter, primarily of the coastal landscapes of Maine, Massachusetts, and New York. He brought his sketches of the summer sea to his home, and transformed them into paintings during the winter. He used his business background to gain exposure as an artist though a deal with a lithograph reproductions corporation in New York, where he died in 1908. This coastal landscape depicts Bailey's Island, ME.
