ALKEN, Henry (1784-1851). The National Sports of Great Britain . London: Thomas McLean, 1821-20. 2° (483 x 304mm). Additional hand-coloured engraved title (duplicated, one dated 1820, the other 1821) and 50 hand-coloured plates (occasional very light spotting, browning and offsetting). Contemporary green straight-grained morocco, gilt spine with alternating stag and decoration in compartments, gilt ruled borders round sides, one of 10, the other of 7 lines, the latter with a decoration at corners, at centre a large gilt stamp illustrating trophies of hunting, shooting and fishing, gilt edges (rebacked with original spine preserved, slightly rubbed), in a folding box of green morocco-backed cloth lined with cream watered silk. FIRST EDITION, second issue with 6 plates watermarked 1822, of Alken's greatest and best-known work. Schwerdt I, p.19; Tooley 41: 'It must always form the cornerstone of any Alken collection'.
