ALKEN, Henry. The National Sports of Great Britain . London: Thomas M'Lean, 1825 [plates dated 1824 and with Whatman 1824 watermark]. 2° (383 x 270mm). 50 hand-coloured etched plates, signed Hy. Alken, Delt', with tissue guards. (Occasional small isolated spots to plates or plate margins, plt. 6 of 'Racing' with marginal tear, some almost imperceptible dust soiling, guards offset, guard to 'Earth Stopper' with repaired tear, text leaf to 'Fox-Hunting' with multiple tears at foremargin, leaf to 'A Prize-Fight' heavily spotted, a few other text leaves with lighter spotting.) UNCUT in near contemporary black straight-grained half morocco and marbled boards, preserving original printed cover label (rubbed, spine frayed at head, corners bumped, front inner hinges slightly split and endpapers creased). Provenance : E.R. Henderson, Landrock, April 1869 (inscription on front pastedown). LARGE PAPER COPY IN FOLIO, UNCUT AND 'VERY RARE'. The original label, preserved on the front pastedown, announces a price of 'six guineas' for the 'fifty coloured plates', double that of the standard octavo edition.
