ALKEN, Henry (1784-1851). The National Sports of Great Britain. London: W. Lewis for Thomas Mclean, 1821 (watermarked 1816-1820). 2° (475 x 318mm). Parallel titles and text in French and English, hand-coloured engraved frontispiece, 50 hand-coloured aquatint plates, all by I. Clark after Henry Alken (Plate of the Stag Hounds repaired at outer plate mark, various marginal tears to margins of plate of the Hackney, some light soiling, about 10 plates with some offsetting.) Contemporary purple straight-grained morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, g.e. (some scuffing, inner hinges strengthened). FIRST EDITION, second issue with frontispiece dated 1821. 'Alken's most important work... It must always form the cornerstone of any Alken collection': Tooley 41; Schwerdt I,p.19.
