ALLAN, George. Collectanea Dunelmensis , Darlington, Allen Private Press, 1769-74, 4°, a collection of 67 publications by various authors, all printed by Allan [Lowdnes Appendix p. 200] -- BROCKETT, John Trotter A Catalogue of Books and Tracts, printed at The Private Press of George Allan, Esq. F.S.A , Newcastle, by S. Hodgson, 1818, one of 76 copies on large paper inscribed "Newcastle 20th Feby. 1818, Presented to the REVD. T. F DIBDIN by John Trotter Brockett." -- and an auction catalogue of the collection of pictures belonging to George Allan, 1822, bound in one vol. contemporary russia, gilt (rubbed and joints weak). Provenance : Thomas Frognall Dibdin; "This collection was purchased in London by my father & given by him to me in the year 1839, John Gregson" (inscription on endpaper); Joseph Haslewood (armorial booklabel). George Allan (1736-1800), was a celebrated antiquary and topographer. His success as an attorny enabled him to collect numerous manuscripts and charters relating to Durham and district. From 1768 he had set up at Darlington a private printing press and made extensive use of his collection in publishing historical works. The presentation of the catalogue to Dibdin from Brockett is curious as the introduction consists of accusations of Dibdins failure as a bibliographer and his inacurate description of the press in The Biliographical Decameron of 1817.
