The abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy had established an anti-slavery religious paper, the "Observor," in St. Louis, then was forced to move it to Alton, Illinois, due to threats. There the press was destroyed three times, and was being set up for a forth when the riots mentioned here occurred. Lovejoy was shot dead, and those intent on defending the press were actually charged with a crime. Howes L348.
