Americae Pars Magis Cognita. Chorographia Nobilis & Opulentae Peruanae Provinciae, atque Brasiliae... MDXCII Author: Bry, Theodore de Place: [Frankfurt] Publisher: Date: 1592 Description: Copper-engraved map. 36.3x44 cm (14¼x17¾"). Rare, important and sublimely engraved map of South America extending northward to include all of Mexico and a vast swath of the southern portion of North America, now the United States. Florida is clearly shown, and named. The map was published to accompany the accounts of the voyages of Johann van Stadden and Jean de Lery. The cartography is drawn from de Bry's own map of Florida and the West Indies after Jacques le Moyne. However, there is no easily discernible source for the South American cartography, with its southern regions shown too broad, but not quite bulging as with the Ortelius version. The map is replete with decorative features, including large elaborate cartouches, coats of arms, two compass roses, sea monster, a Spanish galleon and an intricate border. This is the first state of the map, without the addition of the plan of Mexico City, and other features. Lot Amendments Condition: Perhaps expertly silked, all but indiscernible, fine. Item number: 342986
