Collins congratulates Hopkins only four months after his appointment as Commander in Chief. Expressing high hopes for the future, Collins writes: "[I] hope nay expect to see the day when the American fleets will give laws on the atlantick [ sic ] ocean." Collins thanks Hopkins for the cannons he sent and notes the preparation of defenses at Newport, declaring "it will give me great pleasure to see your fleet Rideing [ sic ] in the harbour of Newport." Hopkins proved unable to accomplish the difficult task of developing an effective challenge to the British fleet and was suspended from command in March, 1777. -- CHAD, H. British Officer . Letter signed to "Mr. Henry Innes Commanding the Polly Armed Schooner," New York, 17 May 1781. 2½ pp., folio . Captain Chad sends orders to Innes, commanding a guard vessel on the North River, in anticipation of possible American naval activity around New York. Emphasizing preparedness, Chad counsels Innes to be ready to avoid any fire vessels or rafts the enemy might send down the ebb, "To have the schooner always clear for action by night and by day," "to have your guns always loaded and primed," to have 1/4 of the crew upon the deck at all times with marines, to lift all boarding nets and ropes at night to prevent boarding, and to examine all boats closely that try to pass on the river. -- TALBOT, Silas (1751-1813). Captain, Continental Navy . Autograph document signed ("Silas Talbot"), n.p., 1 March 1784. 1 p., oblong 12mo. Talbot acknowledges receipt of payment on a consolidated loan office certificate. Silas Talbot, who was wounded severely in the defense of Fort Mifflin on the Delaware, commanded a privateer during the war before his capture and imprisonment. -- LIVINGSTON, Peter. President of the New York Committee of Safety . Autograph document signed, countersigned by David Gelston, Fishkill, 16 October 1776. 1 p., oblong 4to . The Committee of Safety orders Peter V.B. Livingston, treasurer, to send 800 pounds to Captain Rogers for the preparation of his sloop Montgomerie and the payment of his crew. -- WATSON, Brook. General, British Army . Autograph letter signed ("Brook Watson Comm g Genl") to "Mr. Henry Innes Master of the Arm'd sloop Prince William Henry", New York, 2 August 1782. 1 p., 4to . Watson warns Innes to be watchful for the French fleet, specifically "to look out for any Square Rigged Vessels which may appear in the Sound & be very cautious of their coming near you."
