The Repeal. Or the Funeral Procession of Miss Americ-Stamp.
London: 1766 or later]. Hand-colored engraved satirical print (plate size: 250x355 mm), wide margins. Title and text in three columns below the image. Printed on laid paper. Condition : foxing principally in the margins. a dark impression of the famous image about the repeal of the stamp act. Set on the bank of the Thames, with warehouses and goods awaiting shipment to America in the background, George Grenville carrys a small coffin representing the Act toward a vault adorned with two skulls. Other mourners include caricatures of the leading proponents of the tax: William Scott (who leads the procession), the Earl of Bute, the Duke of Bedford, and John Temple. The three ships in the background, to be loaded with the goods for America, are named Conway, Rockingham and Grafton after the leading members of Parliament responsible for the act’s repeal.
