American School, 19th/20th Century Two Works: Portrait of a Gentleman and Framed Clendinen Family Crest. Portrait unsigned, oil on canvas, 14 x 12 in., framed with an oval spandrel in a carved W.K. O'Brien & Bro., New York, frame; Crest signed "E. Maynicke Stillman" l.r., mixed media on paper, 17 5/8 x 17 5/8 in., including the decorative mat. Condition: Portrait with craquelure, surface grime; Crest with toning, acid burn, not examined out of frame. N.B. Emma Maynicke Stillman was listed in census records as an artist, 19th/20th century. In DAR online records, her birthplace is listed as Magdeburg, Prussia, but she was a descendant of a lieutenant in a Philadelphia company at the time of the American Revolution. A handwritten label affixed to the frame backing provides a brief provenance within the Clendinen family.
