[Americana] Paine, Thomas The American Crisis, and a Letter to Sir Guy Carleton, on the Murder of Captain Huddy, and the Intended Retaliation on Captain Asgill, of the Guards London: Printed and Sold by Daniel Isaac Eaton, no date (ca. 1796). Second edition. 8vo. 293 pp. Variant title-page, without the two Resolutions of Congress on verso, and instead with publisher's notification indicating erroneous attribution of first essay to Paine. Contemporary tree sheep, stamped in gilt, red leather spine label, edges and corners rubbed, front joint starting, spine slightly blistered and chipped, head of spine chipped with headband lost. Old cataloguer's description in pencil on front paste-down; ownership signatures on front paste-down, title-page, p. (1), p. 293 verso, and rear paste-down; ink scrawl at top corner of p. 169. Originally printed as pamphlets and in newspapers, Paine's Crisis was published over the course of the American Revolution to bolster the spirits of the American colonists and to galvanize support for the war.
