AMERICANA-VIRGINIA] SYMONDS, WILLIAM. Pisgah euangelica. By the method of the Reuelation, presenting to publike view those Cananites ouer whom our Lord Iesus Christ and his holie church shall triumph after seuerall battailes ... London: Felix Kyngston, for Edmund Weaver... 1606. ESTC describes this as "A variant of the edition dated 1605." Old brown calf, all edges sprinkled red. 7 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches (18 x 14 cm); [26], 266, [2] pp. errata. Worn and rebacked, internally generally a clean copy, with the bookplate of the remarkable collector Lady Charlotte Schreiber (known for her remarkable collections of fans and playing cards). A curious little tract, this is ESTC S114165. This work on Revelations proclaims the imminence of the "first resurrection." Its main interest lies less in Symonds' obsession with Biblical prophecy than in the fact that his patron was been Robert Bertie, Lord Willoughby, and he was also acquainted with William Crashaw, the preacher (and poet) at the Inner Temple. Both men were involved in the foundation of the Virginia colony, and Symonds assisted them in the enterprise, although he did not himself travel to the colony. He is known to have advised Captain John Smith on his A Map of Virginia, issued in 1612 under Smith's name in two separate parts, and to have assisted him in having them published in Oxford. See Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, 2004, online edition; ESTC S114165. C
