The Model 1840 cavalry saber, commonly referred to as the Model 1840 "Wristbreaker” was one of the most well used cavalry sabers by the United States mounted forces in the years leading up to, and throughout the Civil War. This particular example was produced by Ames and is complete with its scabbard and a Pattern 1841 Dragoon saber belt. The blade is plain and devoid of decoration only being marked by the maker on either side the ricasso. The obverse ricasso is marked "AMES MFG. CO. / CABOTVILLE / 1849" and US / WD" on the reverse ricasso. The blade ends at a heavy brass guard which is followed by a grooved wood handle that is covered in brown leather wrapped with double twisted brass wire that fits nicely in the grooves. The length of the saber ends in a domed brass pommel which is marked "WD / J.W.R.". The hefty iron scabbard is equally plain and features two ring mounts which are held by a fine example of a Pattern 1841 Dragoon saber belt. The belt is nearly complete with the original brass parade hook and brass finals on the saber straps but is missing the cross strap. The age of the brass, leather, and stitching are all consistent. Completing the kit is a pattern 1839 belt plate which features lead back puppy paw fasteners and belt hook. The buckle is marked "GAYLORD" on the reverse. CONDITION: The blade exhibits a pleasant dark gray patina with scattered areas of pitting throughout. The guard also exhibits a pleasant patina, which is a warm gold color. The scabbard is donned in a chocolate patina and also exhibits areas of pitting with little wear to the drag. The mounts remain tight and there is only one noticeable dent. Finally, the formerly white buff leather belt has tanned with age but remains flexible. All of the stitching remains tight and the scattered stains add to the character of the set. The belt plate exhibits various blemishes from service wear including a finger print stain to the left of the "S". This is a wonderful saber and belt set which would compliment a pair of period saddle holsters or a Mexican Wars display. Overall good.
