AMMANATI, Bartolommeo (1511-92). Seven autograph letters signed and one part of an autograph letter, comprising five to Giovanni Caccini and one to Fancesco Busini, Provveditori in Pisa, and one to Francesco Pini in Fegline di Prato to be handed to Giovanni Caccini, Florence, 16 December 1570 - 4 February 1571(n.s.) , concerning the modification of the Ponte a mare in Pisa, altogether 7¾ pages, sizes 130 x 215mm - 295 x 215mm , 3 with integral address leaves, 4 with address panels, 2 with papered seals, 4 with traces of seals (small, isolated holes in 3 letters). The city of Pisa was particularly important to Cosimo and became one of the Medici court cities; Christmas and New Year were spent there each year. Cosimo had founded or renewed various civic structures or organisations: the University, the order of the Knights of S. Stefano, and the building of the church of S. Stefano and the Piazza dei Cavallieri. Moves were made to resettle the city and to develop the harbour facilities. As part of the improvements to the waterways Ammanati undertook the repair and remodelling of the Ponte a mare between 1570 and 1572. In these letters he gives details of how he intends to proceed; the use of armatures and timbers, the pickmen required, new arches being cut and a tromba being necessay for the water while work is going on. The short undated note refers to the pickmen from Fegline di Prato mentioned in a letter sent 13 days earlier; these must be Francesco Pini and his sons to whom Ammanati wrote on 14 January 1571, asking him to deliver the letter to Caccini. On a personal level Ammanati explains that the trouble with his eyes has returned. (8)
