19th century. Wood. 92 and 95 cm. This couple represents the founding ancestors of the Nagé people, called Ana deo (children of the gods). These post figures would have been placed on both sides of the entrance to the communal houses that belonged to important and powerful clan leaders. Besides serving a protective function, their presence also showed that the owner had erected a shrine in the village to honor his clan ancestors. (VJ) Provenance: European private collection; Important Belgian collection.
