PROVENANCE The manor of Montclair, New Jersey was built by Julius Forstmann (1871-1939) and his family in the 1930s. They had emigrated from Germany and took the German-based family business to America and achieved great success by building a textile factory in Passaic NJ in the early 20th century, later The Forstmann Woolen Co. The exclusive house with tennis court and pool and the highest quality furnishings was planned for the son Curt E. Forstmann. On behalf of Julius Forstmann, the architect traveled to the castles and mansions of England and Germany to find inspiration for the house and also collect decor and at this trip, this large Kerman carpet was purchased. The picturesque Tudor-style building with bay windows and medieval details came to be one of the most exclusive buildings in this green and charming area of Montclair, a suburb of New York City in the United States. The Kerman carpet was included in the purchase when the Dodo and Edward Swanson family bought Julius Forstmann's exclusive house in the 1950s and later inherited to the current owner.
