An autographed letter from Herbert George Wells (1886-1946), British author, undated but probably circa 1910, on 'Easton Glebe, Dunmow' headed paper, reading "Dear Sir, I am obliged to you for a sight of your ingenious experiment in theology [..?] as you have done me this honour(?) to read my First & Last Things you must know that I find more difficulties than you seem to do in the definition of the individual. My concepts as far as the this thing is surely(?) the working of a common [..?] as [..?]in the human species and doesn't go a step beyond that. The idea you answered(?) for the globe (whixh is making nickel steel and rust {..?] does not appeal to me. Very sincerely yours, H.G. Wells." Also inlcuded with this lot is an autographed postcard from Sir William Matthews Flinders Petrie (1853-1942), English Egyptologist, written to 'Daniel W. Keith Esq, Hayes Common, Kent', in 1886, reading: "I am very to say that I cannot lay my hand on any copies of the paper in this Arch Cant. [ref. Archaaologia Cantiana] on the Hayes pits etc. I may be able to find some possibly on my return from Egypt, for which I start tomorrow. Business has prevented my attending to anything else for some time past, or I would have replied sooner. I hope that some further digging may settle the age of the pits; but the absence of tobacco pipes (as I suppose) seems to show that they could hardly be so late as the 17th cent. Yours very truly, W M Flinders Petrie. and Willaim Petrie
