AN EGYPTIAN PAINTED WOOD SARCOPHAGUS LID FOR ASET-EM-AKHBIT LATE PTOLEMAIC PERIOD, CIRCA 1ST CENTURY B.C. The long lid with arching top, gessoed and brightly painted, the head panel with two facing jackal deities each holding a flail and a sistrum(?), upon shrines, lotus between, bordered by hieroglyphs reading, "A royal offering formula to Osiris;" the sides each with a rectangular vignette depicting the deified woman standing with her arms raised, surmounted by a uraeus -fronted solar disk, offerings before her, facing enthroned Osiris, Isis and Nephthys, with columns of hieroglyphs reading, on the right side, "Recitation by the Possessor of Veneration to Osiris, Foremost of the West, Lord of Busiris, Great God," before Isis, "Recitation by Isis, recitation by Isis, of Abydos, the Shining One" before Nephthys, "Recitation by the goddess(?) Nephthys, recitation by Nephthys, of Abydos, the Shining One," the left side with the hieroglyphs in the vignette reading, before Isis, "...To Osiris, Foremost of the West, Lord of Abydos, and the Shining One," before Nephthys, "...Recitation by the Possessor of Veneration to Osiris, Foremost," five columns between the woman and Osiris, "Recitation by the Possessor of Veneration to Osiris, Foremost of the West, Lord of Busiris, Great God, Lord of Abydos, and the Shining One, The Osiris Ta-Hen," with alternating panels down the sides with a female deity with one arm raised before Osiris seated on a shrine or a Ba-Bird standing atop a shrine, the goddess with a tightly-fitted garment revealing her breast, a surmounted by a solar disk, with captions before the figures, repeating, before Osiris, "Recitation by the Possessor of Veneration to Osiris, Foremost of the West, Lord of Busiris, Great God, Lord of Abydos," and before the Ba-Bird, "A royal offering formula to Osiris, Foremost of the West, Lord of Busiris, Great God, Lord of Abydos, and the Shining One," with a vertical column on the right edge of the panel reading, "Recitation by the Possessor of Veneration to Osiris, Foremost of the [We]st, Lord of Busiris, [Great God, Lord of] Abydos, and the Shining One who makes protection for O[siri]s;" the left side similarly inscribed, a horizontal panel below with jackal deities above shrines; the foot panel rectangular in form with a cavetto cornice, with a funeral barq with deities all seated in profile to the right, with two uraeus -flanked winged solar disks above, the lower inscribed, "The Behdetite, the Great God," a vertical column on the right border reading, "A royal offering formula to Osiris, Foremost of the West, Lord of Busiris, Great God, Lord of Abydos, and the Shining One who makes protection for [Osiris]," a vertical column on the left border reading, "A royal [offering] formula to Osiris, Foremost of the West, Lord of Busiris, [and the Shining One] who makes protection;" the top with a single column of large hieroglyphs reading, "A royal offering formula to Anubis, Foremost of the God's Booth, that he may give you a goodly burial in the Necropolis, the uniting of your body with the Cemetery, Venerated One Hathor, Aset- , born of the Lady of the House Peset-pet, .
