QING DYNASTY, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY
AN EXTREMELY RARE IMPERIAL KESI TWELVE-SYMBOL BLUE-GROUND 'DRAGON' ROBE, JIFU QING DYNASTY, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY Finely woven with varying tones of gold and silver-wrapped threads in the split-weave technique with the prescribed nine five-clawed dragons clutching flaming pearls hovering above the terrestrial diagram and lishui stripe, amidst a ground of dense scrolling lotus interspersed by ruyi -form cloud clusters, Shou characters and bats. The twelve symbols of Imperial authority are arranged in three groups of four: the sun, moon, constellation and rock around the neck; the fu symbol, axe, paired dragons and golden pheasant around the body; the pair of temple cups, aquatic grass, grains of millet and flames above the waves. The dragons are embellished with silver and gold couched threads which delineate the scales on the body, all against a marine-blue ground. 81 3/4 in. (207.8 cm.) wide
