AN IMPERIAL INSCRIBED CIRCULAR INK CAKE
QIANLONG DATED THIRTIETH YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1765 AND OF THE PERIOD
AN IMPERIAL INSCRIBED CIRCULAR INK CAKE QIANLONG DATED THIRTIETH YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1765 AND OF THE PERIOD Finely carved in relief on one side to depict a lone scholar walking on a bridge toward a homestead surrounded by tall pine trees in the near distance. The far distance is detailed with a single pavilion beneath monumental mountains. The reverse side is carved and gilt with a long poem after the title, Yuti Guan Huai shanshui , 'By Imperial Command, Guan Huai's landscape', followed by Chen, Guan Huai jing shu , 'Respectfully written by your servant, Guan Huai', and ending with two seals, Chen , and Huai . The ink cake is bound and moulded on one side with Qianlong sanshi nian zao , 'Made in the thirtieth year of Qianlong'. 5 1/2 in. (14 cm.) diam., lacquer box
