Beschreibung:

An impressive Japanese Export Art Nouveau cabinet. Meiji Period. c.1890 - 1912. This large and spectacular Japanese cabinet is finely carved in Mulberry wood, the front being comprised of open shelves, a large cupboard and panels carved in relief depicting birds amongst foliage, pagodas and mountainous landscapes. Above this is a frieze of scrolling clouds and a pediment carved in high relief as a dragon amongst clouds, flanked by two fish to the corners facing inwards above two long pillars with scrolling dragons. The sides depict further floral panels, each with a pierced central panel depicting Japanese Irises. Beneath this is carved with a floral frieze and stands on four cabriole legs with Iris knees and scroll feet. This eclectic cabinet is an excellent example of how France's Art Nouveau movement influenced the Japanese artisans and craftsmen of the late 19th century, evidence of which being mainly reflected in the production of Japanese cloisonne enamels and bronzes. 85.8 in (218 cm) height, 49.8 in (126.5 cm) width, 21.7 in (55 cm) depth.
