An interesting collection of period photographs of Fort Yates, including three original prints, one reproduction of a period photograph and a contact negative, as follows: a period photograph of the stockades at Fort Yates, taken from an overlook with an Indian settlement in the near distance, stamped on rear "Fuller & Fansler," Ft. Yates, North Dakota, c. 1880, mounted to card, heavily worn with loss to upper and lower left corner, right margin rough, surface abrasions and staining. A damaged but rare early view of Fort Yates in the early years of McLaughlin's tenure. Dick Fansler ran the first photography studio at the settlement until 1900, when it was taken over by Frank Fiske. * A period photograph of the government hospital building, Fort Yates, 165 x 240 mm, featuring a group of bystanders out front and a horse & [funeral?] carriage pulled up to the door, mounted to card. With loss to lower right edge and upper right, heavily worn with surface abrasions, large closed tear at upper center of print, covered with early pencil inscriptions and sketches, annotated on rear in pencil [in Fiske's hand?] "Arrest of Sitting Bull, Fort Yates." Apparently a purported photograph of the hospital building where Sitting Bull lay in state after his death, although subsequent research has been unable to confirm the attribution at rear. There are no known photographs of Sitting Bull lying in state at Fort Yates, although this may be an unrecorded copy. * A period photographic portrait of the Indian Police Corps, Standing Rock Agency, c. 1895, 195 x 85 mm, mounted to card. Light surface wear to card, else fine. * A later photograph [c. 1920] of an earlier print, entitled on rear "Co. 'I', Indian Soldiers, Fort Yates -1891-," 165 x 215 mm, pin holes, short closed tears, else fine. * Contact negative, 75 x 130 mm, in envelope, entitled, "F. S. Durham photo of Ft. Yates in '77," some surface nicks, else fine. Overall, an historic collection of period photographs documenting early life in Fort Yates.
